Spotlight: The Tiliter Retail Algorithms Team

Amelia Kirby

Say hello to our incredibly talented and hard-working machine learning team. These are the people behind the magic who make computer vision and deep learning come to life and solve real-world problems for our retail customers.

We asked the team about their background, why they joined Tiliter, what they enjoy and find challenging each day, and why now is the perfect time to make your mark.

Here's what they had to say.

Rui Dong — Machine Learning Research Engineer

Dora (Rui) Dong was a data analyst dealing with ticketing data in the Aviation industry. Interested in AI (Artificial Intelligence), she completed her PhD degree in deep learning. Dora has always liked the energy and working environment of startup companies and was drawn to Tiliter because the company develops the innovative technology that she's addicted to. And she gets to be a part of great things that make her excited to come to work every day.

For Dora, every day as a machine learning research engineer is challenging. Real-world problems are never the same, and there's no copy-paste — they also need an innovative and custom solution. She finds solving these problems make her days interesting.

The biggest challenge for Dora is to stay updated, as the tech is moving forward and evolving every day.

It's the perfect time to join the machine learning team at Tiliter because Dora says the team and company are growing and constantly dreaming big — "We are the technology engine of Tiliter!."

Sufyan Asghar — Machine Learning Engineer

Sufyan has a Bachelors in Engineering and previously worked at a Research Institute for three years. He started his Master in 2016 at TUM and did various internships and jobs in parallel at Intel and Infineon, to name a couple.

He wanted to work in a fast-paced startup environment and found that the work Tiliter was doing at the forefront of computer vision aligned well with his experience. So, he decided to join the team in 2019. He found the interviews with founder Chris and Martin more like an interesting discussion, making his decision easy.

Sufyan enjoys that every day brings something new and a different challenge to work on. He says you would have to work extremely hard to find the work boring! Training our models with 100% classification accuracy keeps him on his toes.

The deep learning and AI space are growing fast, bringing exciting opportunities to learn and develop for Sufyan and the team.

Tiliter is at an exciting point and is continuously improving and developing its AI technology. This makes it an exciting time to get involved in Sufyan's option. Plus, there is still a lot of room to grow in the space we are working in.

Sufyan adds that "the people at Tiliter are highly supportive and encouraging, which gives you an overall sense of a great work environment to excel." In other words, Tiliter really is a great place to work.

Khai Do — Machine Learning Engineer

Before he joined Tiliter, Khai worked in the Hospitality industry. Then during his final years at university, he was lucky enough to get a tutor job and the chance to do an international capstone project with other students. They joined an international competition about implementing Machine Learning in Computer Vision organised by IEEE and won the highest prize. Khai was hooked.

After the capstone project, Khai was more interested in Machine Learning and its applications. Tiliter gave him the chance to do what he was interested in, which was a dream come true. In addition, Tiliter is also a fast-paced startup which made it even more attractive to Khai.

Khai enjoys that AI and Machine Learning are still in their early phases, so there are many challenges to work on. He says the most interesting part is that you can "teach" AI models and algorithms to learn and solve extremely complex problems by themselves and receive outstanding results, which is often not doable by conventional programming.

Khai is particularly focused on optimising our model performance while reducing the need for resources and effort.

Tiliter is expanding quickly. More interesting projects are underway, as well as existing projects that still have room for improvement, and Khai wants more great people to bring these projects to real life. At Tiliter, says Khai, "You will be surrounded and supported by incredibly talented people, who also push you constantly to be a better version of yourself. Your hard work is also recognised and celebrated by everyone, which makes Tiliter a really great place to work."

Evgenii Titov — Machine Learning Engineer

Before joining Tiliter, Evgenii worked on several other machine vision-related projects. He also had deep experience with more traditional structured data.

He first read about Tiliter on LinkedIn and instantly realised the company solves a very interesting subset of ML problems. He did his research on the company and the people, and before he realised it, he was applying for the job and solving the interview problems — "the best ones I've ever got my hands on due to how close to real-world problems they were."

Evgenii loves that you never stop learning because the field is developing so rapidly. In addition, the Machine Learning Engineer role is a relatively new one on the market, and he finds it very interesting. The position requires you to work on multiple fronts such as Data Science, Data Engineering, Software Development, MLOps etc., so it just never gets boring. Evgenii loves the challenge of keeping up to date with the latest tech.

Tiliter has top-class engineers working hard to revolutionise the way we do things with computer vision. The company has proven it can deliver working and reliable products and has "plenty of excellent ideas for the future and huge growth potential," he adds.
